Biography

Hi, I’m Stephanie (she/her/hers). As a multi-faceted communicator, I’m dedicated to making a positive difference through my skills as a designer, writer, and creator.

I grew up in Treaty 7 territory as a fourth/fifth-generation English, Scottish, and German settler in a town called Cochrane, Alberta. This land that offered me years of love, learning, and play is the territory of the Niitsítpiis-stahkoii ᖹᐟᒧᐧᐨᑯᐧ ᓴᐦᖾᐟ (Blackfoot / Niitsítapi ᖹᐟᒧᐧᒣᑯ), Ĩyãħé Nakón mąkóce (Stoney), Michif Piyii (Métis), Ktunaxa ɁamakɁis, and Tsuut’ina Peoples.

I am now living and growing on the traditional, unceded territory of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem First Nation) where I also work as a freelance creative.

With over a decade of experience, I have a knack for finding clarity in complexity and have been described as bringing a sense of grounded-ness to processes that feel ambiguous. I enjoy building creative, multi-modal strategies that share knowledge in a compassionate way and that help shift mindsets. I do this through in-house roles, freelance creative services, and personal creative projects and art.

Freelance and In-house Communicator

In my previous work as a freelancer for eight years, I provided graphic design and copywriting services for organizations such as Vancouver Coastal Health, Legion Foundation, and SFU’s Strengthening Canadian Democracy initiative. I took a break from freelancing from 2021 to 2025 and am now re-launching my freelance career to provide web, graphic, and content design services to purpose-driven organizations.

I’ve also worked as a full-time in-house communications manager for post-secondary and non-profit organizations such as SFU’s Centre for Dialogue, UBC’s SARAVYC, EMBERS, and Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland.

My freelance and in-house communications strengths include:

  • Writing engaging narratives
  • Facilitating multi-language translations
  • Mobilizing research findings to a broad audience
  • Designing websites, especially within WordPress.org
  • Setting up streamlined systems for communications
  • Creating graphic design assets
  • Enhancing brand strategy
  • And more!

Creative Writer and Poet

In 2012, I graduated from MacEwan University with a Diploma in Journalism and a Bachelor of Applied Communications in Professional Writing with Distinction. I focused my studies on the creative side of writing, developing work in fiction, memoir, screenwriting, and poetry. In 2012, my short story, Penny in the Sky, won the Grant MacEwan Literary Arts Scholarship and I continue to work on creative writing projects. Subscribe to my Substack to hear about new releases.

Web Designer

Throughout my communications roles, I became increasingly interested in web design and, in 2023, received a Software Engineering Diploma from BrainStation. My web design strengths lie in front-end design using languages such as HTML, CSS/SCSS, JavaScript, React, and mySQL. I provide freelance web design services and am currently working on several WordPress design projects which I hope to launch in the Spring. Stay tuned and subscribe to Substack!
